Sand/Paste Plaster

This is a super-cool type of plaster that only uses fine sand with wheat paste (no clay!) which we learned from Athena Steen.

Make wheat paste: 1 part wheat flour into two parts tap water. Mix and then add to three parts boiling water. Mix this mixture while it’s heating so it doesn’t burn on the bottom. When it produces a bubble or two (it’s starting to boil) turn off heat and let cool a bit until use.

Add the wheat paste to an equal part of screened or purchased fine sand. A little more water might be needed to get a better consistency. Because of the slimy and slippery paste it is a pleasure to plaster with and dries super strong.

No pigment is necessary and this “natural look” can be quite stunning. However, this plaster also takes pigments really well - a little goes a long way and it stays quite true to color.

Try it out! I think you’ll love it.
